TRAIL
BUILDING & MAINTENANCE:
PIONEER TRAIL
The
Pioneer Trail route is expected to proceed southward
from the town of Kurtz on Rt. 58, in Jackson County,
and depart the county just east of Sparksville, where
a bridge crosses the Muscatatuck River. From the bridge
the trail will move eastward in Washington County towards
Rt. 135, where two miles of trail can be situated on
state forest land, and then south to Plattsburg, where
the state has just acquired a property. From this property
it is possible the trail may be connected due east to
Spurgeon Hollow, the northern terminus of the original
Knobstone Trail.
Trail
connection work is ongoing: HHC volunteers are researching
property records, evaluating suitable routes, and approaching
willing sellers and donors of potential trail easements
and property.
Updates on Pioneer Trail work from the HHC newsletter (Adobe Acrobat format): July 2009, April 2009
Local
multiple use nature/historical/exercise parks will be
developed along the route where desirable and feasible
to extend the usefulness of the Pioneer Trail to local
communities or schools it passes near.
Do
you live in Salem, Scottsburg, Brownstown, Seymour (or
even Indianapolis) and want to get involved? E-mail
